Move over white male superheroes. There’s a new comic sheriff in town.

Diversity in Comics

Emerald City Comics hosted a Black History Month event to highlight diversity in comics. The store featured Black Panther and Firestorm cosplay actors, free giveaways, and a raffle to win a Black History Month Collection Pack.

“With the world becoming more diverse, comic book publishers have followed suit and added characters from all backgrounds,” said Darryl Blacker, marketing director for Emerald City Comics.

He explained the importance of diverse superheroes, with specific mentions to Marvel’s Black Panther and Luke Cage.

“Fortunately, you’re never going to go anywhere nowadays where you just have one select group of people, and there’s no diversity, there’s no change, there’s no difference,” said Blacker. “And comic books have to be the same way.”
